Daily Morning Watch - 11 September 2012


SINGAPORE
Thai Beverage PCL (THBEV) said that "The board understands that a party acting in concert with the company is exploring the possibility of making an offer for Fraser & Neave Ltd."

Cosco Corp Singapore (COS)'s COSCO Shipyard Group said it secured a contract valued over $200M from Axis Offshore to build one harsh environment semi submersible accommodation rig.

Tiger Airways (TGR) reported August traffic of 556,000 passengers up 62% on the year. Traffic (measured in revenue passenger-kilometres) grew by 58% outpacing capacity (measured in available seat-kilometres) growth of 45%. This led to a 7 percentage point year-on-year increase in passenger load factor to 84%.


US markets fell on Monday. On the US economic data front, consumer credit dropped $3.276B (+$9.200B expected) in July. Stocks in the transportation and telecommunication services sectors traded higher while shares in the semiconductors and technology hardware & equipment sectors were under pressure. Regarding some US company news, American International Group (AIG -2.03% to $33.3) announced that the US Treasury has launched a $18B offering of its stock. Separately, Plains Exploration & Production (PXP -10.51% to $36.09) has agreed to buy from BP Exploration & Production and BP America Production Coal their interests in certain deepwater Gulf of Mexico oil and gas properties for $5.55B.

In Europe , Sentix investor confidence index increased to -23.2 for September vs -30.3 the month before and -30.5 expected by economists. Bank of France business sentiment index was up to 93 in August (89 expected) vs 90 in July. French industrial production gained 0.2% in July after having being flat in June. It was expected to be down by 0.5%. Regarding the stocks, Xstrata gained ground as investors outlook about a fusion with Glencore is positive. Philips lost ground after Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to "neutral" from "buy". This morning, the Nikkei225 index opened lower, and is consolidating below its MT moving average.


CHINA - HK
China 's National Development and Reform Commission to raise prices for gasoline and diesel by 550 and 540 yuan per metric ton respectively to 9,090 and 8,280 yuan, effective this Tuesday.

China 's August passenger car sales climbed 11% YoY to 1.22 million vehicles, vs 1.12 million in July, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said. Also, car sales are expected to be better in the fourth quarter than in 3Q12, according to Dong Yang, general secretary of the CAAM.

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said "The Diaoyu Islands are an inherent part of China 's territory. On issues concerning sovereignty and territory, the Chinese government and people will never ever yield an inch." (Xinhua)

HSBC Holdings (5)'s HSBC Bank Middle East Limited has entered into an agreement to sell its banking business in Pakistan to JS Bank Limited.

China Shenhua Energy (1088) August coal sales totaled 39.5 million tonnes, up 29.1% from August 2011, while commercial coal production climbed 8.0% YoY to 25.6 million tonnes. Gross power generation declined by 1.5% YoY to 18.53B KWh.
